Planning A Funeral
Planning a funeral in advance is always the best option. By getting a plan put in place early, you'll avoid any rising costs and it will provide you with much more flexible payment options. After a death, legalities and arrangements can be the last thing that we wish to think about. There are however a few steps that are required by law.

Things to Do First
Inform the GP
The doctor will in most cases provide and sign a death certificate. This will be required to register the death.
Register the Death
By law, all deaths must be registered at a register office. This must be completed within 5 days for residents of England and Wales. In Scotland, the limit is 8 days.
You can also physically register the death at the register office, providing that there is no post-mortem. They will provide you with a Certificate for Burial or a Cremation and Certificate of Registration of Death.
Documentation and information that may be required to register the death includes:
- Death certificate
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate (if applicable)
- NHS card
- Full name of deceased as well as any previous names
- Most recent address of the deceased
- Occupation of the deceased
- Details of a surviving spouse or partner
- Details of any state benefit that the deceased were receiving
